In this blog post I am going to talk about the different types of social media that I am currently making use of as well as what I use them for. But first of all, what even is social media? According to dictionary.com, social media is defined as “websites another online means of communication that are used by large groups of people to shareinformation and to develop social and professional contacts” which includes websites such as Facebook or Twitter.

As of right now, I have an account on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and WhatsApp. Facebook has been my first social media account but as I grew older I started using Twitter more and more and Facebook faded. On the other hand, the messenger app WhatsApp, that has turned more and more into a social media app after recent updates, is very popular all over Europe because that is what all the foreigners use on the soccer team, and I didn’t even know about the app till I was told to get it for our team group chat. I mostly access these accounts via my smart phone which is what most people especially in my generation do nowadays. Every now and then I also use my laptop to gain access to these social media websites. I use Snapchat and WhatsApp mainly to communicate with people, I use Facebook and Instagram to either post pictures or videos myself or to keep track of what my friends and people who I know post. However, especially Facebook turned into a website that is overloaded with unnecessary videos which is why I do not use it very often anymore.

One thing that I do not like about Snapchat is its messaging function and I wish they would update it. I think it is weird that you cannot see the messages you send to a person after you have sent it which makes it really hard to text over Snapchat because sometimes I forget what I said. For this reason, Snapchat is not the most important social media app but instead WhatsApp is. For me, WhatsApp is the main way to communicate to my friends. You can use it to either send messages to one person or a group of people, send pictures or videos and even make voice or video calls all for free. You just need to use your data but since it does not take up much of your data, it is the perfect app for me.
